The first day of transitional kindergarten (TK) or kindergarten is a significant milestone in a child’s life. Schools and families have a shared responsibility to ensure classrooms are ready to serve all types of students and that our youngest learners are prepared for their first day of school.

TK Among Options for
4-year-olds

Like kindergarten, TK is optional in California. It is part of a set of educational choices for families of 4-year-olds that includes California State Preschool, federal Head Start classrooms, or community-based and private early learning and care programs. This continuum of programs is often referred to as universal prekindergarten, or UPK.

Immunizations Required for TK and Kindergarten

Schools in California require families to provide documented proof of several immunizations or a medical exemption at the time of admission. These include polio, hepatitis B, and the vaccine that prevents measles, among others. In addition, many other childcare settings have their own immunization requirements.
