DC, NYC to Occidental in search of better mental health Citing the impact of the pandemic, founder Stephanie Lee moved from a city with a population of 12 million to the unincorporated town of Occidental boasting just 1,000 inhabitants to nurture selfmade’s growth. Previously, Lee spent a decade in the political and beauty industries. She experienced a mental health crisis spanning three years at the height of her career. Reckoning with depression and anxiety, it was therapy and building community that helped Lee heal. selfmade was born from her year-long solo travel in 2018 where she explored mental health attitudes and behaviors around the world. Lee was named a 2023 Changemaker by Well + Good and has been featured in Paper Magazine, Fast Company, Business Insider and many others in her mission to champion behavior change.
